about

Growing up in the era of reality TV, celebrity obsession and the beginnings of the social media JESA depicts the toxic culture of dieting, body shaming, ageism in 'Fighting With A Mirror'. Glitchy piano, a bass line and conservational-like lyrics "shave your legs and cut your hair... pick your skin and make your eyebrows thin..."; the song opens with a discussion of the grooming pressures on young women. JESA contrasts the aggressive strums of the acoustic guitar and rolling drums with her sweet angelic voice. An anthem-like message is drilled home about waving goodbye to comparison as she yet again so perfectly articulates the modern society with empathy, compassion and well-articulated rage.

lyrics

V1: Shave your legs and cut your hair it’s only natural to care
Pick your skin and make your eyebrows thin this is what we do
Fit the box, smooth your edges we don’t want no curvy crookedness
does anybody else think thats messed up

CH: Fighting with a mirror
Fighting with an image
Fighting with another about how pretty I am
When you stare deep down
Is it all clear now
Nothing good comes from comparison

Ah’s

V2:
Vulnerable
As the lines get tighter
A contour a colour
a face with a smile drawn on
would it help to fill the gaps
We supposedly have
Fuck it it sucks to carry a mask
to want it all off but it’s never enough
Why don’t we stop we push and we prode
I want it all gone why we don’t stop

Fighting with a mirror
Fighting with an image
Fighting with another about how pretty I am
When you stare deep down
Is it all clear now
Nothing good comes from comparison

Ah’s

Nothing good comes from comparison
In my head I say goodbye to it (repeat)
(Over the ahs)
