about

‘Black Swan’s first iteration was in 2017; a time when JESA was studying poets like Rupi Kaur, W.H. Auden and Emily Dickinson and obsessively listening to Nai Palm, Amy Winehouse and The Teskey Brothers.

JESA recalls “‘I wrote ‘Black Swan’ at a pivotal turning point in my life as I was coming to terms with having depression.” In the song she metaphorically describes mental illness as being a toxic relationship you want to break from.

The track opens with intriguing vocals, smooth drumming (by Bobby Alu), blues guitar and soaring organ parts that decorate her pain as soulful and sweet. In the second half, a punchy bridge with powerful church-like vocal-stacks and arpeggiating bass lines bring a sense of hopefulness with the message “wearing all the weather, now I’m feeling better, dance with the pain, don’t let it stay”.

Ending with a free-flow jam by producer Billy Otto and JESA, ‘Black Swan’ is a beautiful reminder to everyone to reach out in their time of need and the power of music to change our emotional state.

lyrics

I acquainted myself
with a double-edged sword
sharpened on my skin
the most unlawful win was yours

Mercy is for the weak you said
Ego filled like my bath-
tub at 3am
trying to wash off your stench

Two-faced criminal
Killed me subliminally
Too late to realise
the weeds you planted inside

You're a black swan in a black pond
I'm swimming far from
I was blinded I'm relighting
My fire in the sky

Casting shadows as you pass
Causing riots in you path,
Tinted glass
is transparent at last

You can paint a coward gold,
Dress em up in the nicest clothes,
I'm not sold
if the truth isn't home
No I’m not sold no no no no no no no
If the truth isn’t home

You're a black swan in a black pond
I'm swimming far from
I was blinded I'm relighting
My fire in the sky

Wearing all the weather
now I’m feeling better,
Dance with pain
don’t let it stay,
Stare it in the face
call it by name,
You can reach out and say
I’m not okay,
Cause I’m finding my faith,
Get back to the place
where the darkness fades,

You're a black swan in a black pond
I'm swimming far from
I was blinded I'm relighting
My fire in the sky
You're a black swan in a black pond
I'm swimming far from
I was blinded I'm relighting
My fire in the sky
My fire in the sky
